Application Process

Courses at UU

Students apply for full-time higher education courses at universities and colleges in the UK using the UCAS Apply system. UCAS have developed a section specifically for Parents – for more information, visit www.ucas.com/parents.

UCAS is the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service and they coordinate the undergraduate admissions process in the UK. Your son/daughter will be given a password and can find out the different stages of the application process.

Application forms will normally be submitted online from September until 15 January of the year the applicant will enter the course. However, applications may normally be administered and sent via the school/college at a date decided upon by the school/college.

Researching/Choosing courses

Before your son/daughter makes their application to university, it is important that they research all their choices. They are advised to get copies of the most up-to-date Undergraduate Prospectus for each of the universities they are interested in. It is important that they bring these home and discuss their choices with you. They can apply for up to five courses on their application form.

It is also advisable to attend university open days. Our Open Days take place at Ulster normally during the 2nd week in September (visit Open Days and Events for more information). Although we invite local schools and colleges, we are delighted when visiting prospective students come along with their family. You can attend talks, chat to academic staff and tour the campus, and find out about what courses can be studied, and chat to students about their experiences.

Offers

Offers will be made through UCAS.
Conditional Offer – this means that your son/daughter will have to achieve certain entry requirements/grades to get a place on this course.
Unconditional Offer – this means that your son or daughter has a place if they want it with no conditions attached. This is only likely if he/she already have the A levels (or eequivalent) required.
Rejection: This means that the application has been unsuccessful, and he/she will not be given an offer on this course.

Accept/decline offers
Once offers have all been received another important decision needs to be made. The applicant needs to choose between their offers and accept 2 – CF (firm) and CI) insurance.

  • CF (firm) should be the applicant’s first choice
  • CI (insurance) is the insurance or back up if the entry conditions for the CF choice are not met.

Results

Exam result are generally released in August, and at that stage your son/daughter will know whether or not he/she has met the requirements of the CF (firm) or CI (insurance) offers. UCAS online will confirm the position.

Enrolment at university

The start of your son or daughter’s university life will commence in September. They will receive information on their timetable and registration dates directly from the university.
