Why University?
Higher education is about taking education to the next level.
Having a degree improves career prospects and earning potential. On average, people with a higher education qualification tend to earn more over their working life than those without.
At Ulster we have a high employment record, above the national average. The number of graduates either going directly into employment, further study or a combination of both is 89%.
A university qualification is essential for pursuing some vocational careers like pharmacy, chartered engineering, architecture, medical-related professions and many more. Degree courses can also be a stepping stone to the next level of education – postgraduate and doctorate study.
Higher education also develops important transferable skills that are valued by employers, such as problem-solving, the ability to communicate well, and intellectual and research skills. These skills together with the academic qualification attained offers graduates an advantage in the fast-changing world of employment.
So, as a parent, it is never too early to start talking to your son/daughter about the type of career they are interested in. It is also important to assess their performance in subjects they are studying at school. A student will always do better studying at university if they have chosen a subject they are good at, and enjoy.
There is lots of help available to you – attend school meetings and chat to teachers about your son/daughter’s progress, attend careers events (your school will give you a note of these) and look through university prospectuses. Also, it's advisable to find out more about the application process.
