Applying to University
Students applying for a full-time higher education course at university in the UK do so online via UCAS Apply system – for more information, visit www.ucas.com
UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) coordinate the undergraduate admissions process in the UK.
Your school/college will introduce you to the system and help you through the process of application: from creating a profile to submitting your application. You will be given a username and password to enter the system. Your application will be administered and sent via the school/college at a date decided upon by the school/college.
The UCAS website has numerous videos and guides to demonstrate how the process works.
Deadline Dates
There are a number of deadlines you need to be aware of. Application forms can be submitted online from September until 15 January of the year the applicant will enter the course - however, other deadline dates occur for Art and Design courses.
Researching/Choosing Courses
You can make up to five course choices in your application. However, before you make your application to university, it is important that you research your options. Check out the university websites, UCAS profiles and request copies of the most up-to-date undergraduate prospectus for each university.
It is also advisable to attend university open days. Our Open Days take place at Ulster normally during the 2nd week in September - visit Open Days and Events for more infromation. Although we invite local schools and colleges to Open Days, we are delighted when prospective students come along individually, or with their family. Applicant Events for specific subjects are organised during the application cycle - so look out for those that may help you make your final decision.
Offers
Offers will be made through UCAS.
Conditional Offer – this means that you will have to achieve certain entry requirements/grades to get a place on the course.
Unconditional Offer – this means that place is offered with no conditions attached. This is only likely if you have A levels or the equivalent.
Rejection: This means that the applicant has been unsuccessful, and will not be given an offer on the course.
Accept/decline offers
Once these have all been received, another important decision needs to be made. You need to choose between all your offers and accept two - CF (firm) and CI) insurance.
- CF (firm) should be your first choice
- CI (insurance) is the insurance or back up if the entry conditions for the CF choice are not met.
Results
Results for various qualifcation will be published at different dates - but generally in August (of year of entry) or just before.
Once you are ware of your results, you will know whether or not you meet the requirements of the CF firm or CI insurance offers. UCAS and the university to which you have applied will be automatically informed.
If you have met or exceeded your entry requirements you are accepted onto your CF (firm) choice. If not, you may be accepted onto your CI (insurance) choice.
Enrolment at university
You will begin your life as a university student in September and will receive information on registration, timetabling, etc directly from the university - hopefully you will make University of Ulster you First Choice!
