  • Final year student Matthew Tostevin

“My interests and skills are inclined toward the practical and I was looking for a course involving film and photography that provided hands-on experience. The Creative Technology course offered at the Magee campus seemed to me a unique degree that would let me pursue the sort of work I wanted to do whilst equipping me with the knowledge and qualities required to succeed in a competitive job market.

I settled in really well here. I lived away from home, and the accommodation was good and very close to the campus. I managed to make a lot of friends.

The lecturers are great, very friendly and supportive. They really know their stuff and they encourage students to do innovative projects that test your abilities to the full and make the learning experience challenging and yet fun. Plus you get the opportunity to exhibit your work in public, which gives a sense of pride and achievement.

I am really enjoying my course and learning a lot. The city itself is small, but there are plenty of clubs and pubs and nightlife. The campus location is ideal - not far from the city centre with its historic walls and murals, stunning views over the River Foyle and amazing countryside in Donegal, which is great for walks.”

“I chose to study at University of Ulster as it is a highly regarded university with brilliant facilities, and a friendly atmosphere. The student experience at Ulster is amazing. I have met so many lifelong friends by being here. The university itself is very social, with plenty of places to have lunch/coffee and also the Students’ Union bar where you can play pool on your lunch break and listen to music.

Classes at university are a lot more relaxed than they are at school. Most importantly – no uniform! And the lecturers are very friendly. Lectures are followed by a seminar class which is made up of a small proportion of your class in a more intimate setting. I have acquired many skills throughout my course. I now communicate effectively, and research and time manage my projects successfully. I am also a lot more confident in my area of study.

The best decision I made was to live in university accommodation. I met so many people and there was always something going on, and everyone makes a huge effort as they are all in the same situation. The facilities are brilliant. I lived in a six bed house in Agherton Village, Portstewart, with a communal kitchen, bathrooms and lovely living room. It is easily the best choice I ever made and I made loads of friends.

Coleraine is quite a small town, but with lots to do. There are plenty of shops and activities to do whilst you’re here. If you fancy a change from the usual student nightlife, the Jet Centre hosts a cinema, bowling alley, games and amusements as entertainment. Portstewart and Portrush are the main areas for nightlife, with something on every night. There are also beautiful restaurants and scenic areas to visit such as a walk along the promenade or the Giants Causeway, which make a perfect break from studying

I have just completed my placement year, employed as a marketing assistant for the University of Ulster based at the Magee campus. I learnt so much from this job opportunity, and it gave me a taste of what working life is really like, and I loved it. I assisted with different events in the academic calendar and marketed different campaigns for the University, including organising student guides during the open days.

I now feel a lot more confident when going for that job interview for my ideal career because I have the skills necessary to be an asset to a business.

My advice to new students is to pick your course carefully. It is necessary to research what you want to do to find out what is really involved. Whilst here, make the most of every given opportunity. University is where you can reinvent yourself and be who you really want to be. It will open you mind, grace you with a diverse culture and be full of excitement and learning curves from beginning to end.”
